CANDIDATES

IN DEVELOPMENT

Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is transported to a high school election in 2003, as two hopeful candidates find themselves competing for the class presidency and end up winning much more than they bargained for.

In this hilarious and heartwarming new musical, Shakespeare's OG rom-com gets an early 2000s teen movie makeover. The archetypal sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick are reimagined as Molly and Freddie, childhood best friends who have grown up and apart and now the only thing they seem to have in common is their mutual hatred for one another!

Candidates is an original musical comedy with a satirical bite. The show draws inspiration from musicals Legally Blonde and Heathers, teen screen adaptations of Shakespeare such as 10 Things I Hate About You and She's The Man. as well as many other classic teen comedy/coming of age movies such as Mean Girls, She's All That, Booksmart, The Duff and Easy A.

Much Ado About Nothing? Candidates is a show worth making a fuss about!

Candidates has been developed with the support of The Lowry, University College Weston, Leeds Conservatoire and recieved a work-in-progress production at GSA in 2024. The show is now being developed for professional production .
